This diagram is showing the workings of the virtual retina display. It starts with a video source that is then broken down by drive electronics. The photons are modulated with video information, which is then scanned in a pattern that allows it to be projected onto the retina of the users eye. This presents a high resolution image that is so clear it can assist those who have partial vision loss.

Description

Virtual Retina Display is the newest innovation to come to the viewing experience from monitors to televisions to laptop computers. It is a new form of display technology that aims at the retina of the eye. The person viewing the content appears to be a conventional display that is hovering in the space in front of them.
This unique technique results in images that are bright, high contrast and high resolution.Virtual Retina Display gives the viewer the illusion of seeing a typical screen-sized display that hovers in the air a few feet away. The technology can provide full-color dynamic displays, but in preparation and practice the elements necessary to gain the full likelihood of the technology are either highly expensive or simply not built yet.

Applications

Allowing for a new way to create visual images, the development of the Virtual Retina Display presented a way to clarify images for those who have low vision or partial sight loss. This new crisp, high resolution is now being brought to use in surgical displays. This new interface requiring human eye contact, allows for the virtual retina display to be featured on device-user interactions such as smart phones, tablets and laptops. Being able to have sharper, clearer images on screens that seem to be continually growing smaller and smaller seems to be in never-ending high demand.


Virtual Retina Display uses high luminance and resolution that can be applied to many career fields ranging from medicine to communications and manufacturing. In the case of medicine, if a surgeon needs to remove a tumor, the see through technology combined with head tracking technology can be applied to help them locate specifically where the tumor is, therefore simplifying the process. Also, VRD is a leap in the direction of Virtual Reality. It can benefit educational and architectural purposes, as well as allowing virtual long distance conferences to occur.
